![]() 03/27/10 - Earth Hour! How do you participate? Starting at 8:30 pm, tonight, March 27, just turn the lights off! Landmarks like the Empire State Building in NY, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, Mount Rushmore, Toronto's CN Tower, the London Bridge, dozens of Casinos in Las Vegas, 125 countries plan to turn off the lights for one hour tonight to raise awareness of climate change and energy conservation. So use this hour in the dark to plan what you're really going to do to help the planet. There are lots of things that take less than one hour but add up to a lot of conservation.
•Turn off lights when you leave a room for 15 minutes or longer. Earth Hour is only 60 minutes. It's a start, maybe a wake-up call for some when they see landmarks and cities go dark. What we do the rest of the day and the rest of the year is what counts in the long run. 06/28/09 - Coaches vs Cancer, Bowl for the Cure

1. FIGHT THE PHANTOM. After you turn them off, many electronics still draw electricity. This phantom load can cost up to $175 a year. Put all electronics on a power strip with an off-button, and be vigilant about clicking off every night.
2. UNPLUG GEAR. Leaving a cell phone or MP3 charger plugged in wastes $10 per year for each device. Simple fix: Unplug those cords when you grab your charged device.
3. WEAR A SWEATER. Think comfortable rather then tropical. Heat to 68 versus 78, and you can save $180 a year. Consider a programmable thermostat for additional savings.
4. START STRIPPING. A big roll of weather-stripping tape costs only $1.50 and pays big dividends on your energy bill. Apply it inside and out, on all windows and unused doors.
5. SWITCH OFF. Mom was on to something here: Turn off any unused lights. And replace incandecent bulbs with compact fluorescents, especially for exterior and security lights.
6. TUNE UP YOUR TANK. Many water heaters are set 40 to 50 degrees too high, which results in a huge energy drain. Reset your water heater to 100 degrees and enjoy major savings.
7. LET LAUNDRY LINGER. Wait until you have a full load and make the most of the same amout of hot water and electricity. Switch to cold-water detergents and bleach to reduce water heating costs. And consider air-drying some of your clothes.
8. TWEAK YOUR DISHWASHER. Instead of using the dry cycle on your dishwasher, rely on air-dry. A bonus: The added moisture helps humidty levels in dry winter months.
9. SHORTEN YOUR SHOWERS. Limit all showers to 15 minutes or less. Before you jump in, set a portable digital timer to serve as a reminder. Also consider installing a low-flow showerhead, which cuts your water usage by half or more without affecting your bathing expierence. 08/16/08 - Think Pink Softball game
